Superweek Chronicles #6 - 60 Laps, 50 Miles, 1:45:00, PCW Cycling Heritage Square Criterium
They called a $103 crowd priem with 3 to go. Eric was in a 3 man break that was not coming back so I was sitting waiting for the finish. They called that and I decided it would be good enough for me. Patrick gave me a huge pull into the final turns. Came out of the last turn in front and just opened it up. About 200 meters. He got me by 6 inches. And I gave it everything, so the finish was out of question for me. Eric got 3rd place. Patrick got pushed off the course in the last turn for the the field sprint. Surprisingly, the damage to body and bike was very minimal. I twas a really fun race. Patrick lead out Eric for a priem early in the race, which Eric took. Then later on, there was a $45 priem called. Half way around the course, Patrick swung wide, looked at the field like Lance, then launched. He took it all the way to the line. After all week long, we have won a combined total of $660. That covers our entry fees and then some.

Sheboygan, Wisconsin
The PCW Cycling Heritage Square Criterium is one of the premier races in the International Cycling Classic. It is known by the racers as a great course and a great race for primes. The course is set in a small business district on the south side of Sheboygan called "Heritage Square" by the merchants in the area. The "S" curve after the start, the long straightaway on the back side of the course, and the slight incline before the final turn provide outstanding opportunities to view the race.

Superweek Chronicles #6 Bellin Health Village of Howard Cycling Classic
Ergomo Pro/Spin
Legs felt great today. Must have been all the pasta and the large peanut butter cup blizzard last night and 3 pancakes, eggs and hash browns this morning. Slept well. Patrick and Eric were feeling good as well. The course was very smooth and wide, you could pedal through all the turns. We all went for $50 priems, and we all came up 2nd. I was spinning my 53x11 at 42mph when I went for it, got beat by a wheel. With 3 laps to go, there were 2 riders about 100 yards up the road, and nobody wanted to work, so I decided to go to the front and inject some pace for the team. We came around with 2 go and they weren't back yet, so I did it again. They were back before one to go, so I just focused on recovering and position, but didn't do too well on position. Eric managed to get up in there. The whole field was together about 10 wide with one to go. Basically a huge drag race to the line and I was too far back to do much. A bit scary moving up through a shattered pack at 35 plus. Ended up 22nd, Patrick 13 and Eric 8. We all raced strong and are feeling good, so we'll throw down for the finale tomorrow.

Superweek Chronicles #5 WDSC Cedarburg Cycling Classic presented by Time Warner Cable
Ergomo Pro/Spin
Legs are starting to get sore now. I still felt like I would be OK today. The course has a decent amount of climbing in it (70 feet per lap, 45 laps!), but it's gradual and I felt really strong on the climbs. I could open a gap any time I wanted. It was a sprint off the start line for half a lap. I had a normalized power of 350 for the first 20 minutes. Patrick attacked hard around 15 minutes. The field came back and I attacked hard when they were trying to recover. It was a great counter move, but I went way too hard. 1/3 of the field had dropped out at this point. I drifted to the back on the next lap. Then I saw Patrick give the sign he was dropping out. I think that did something psychologically. I kept going, but 2 riders in front of me let a big gap open up. I powered past them and started up the hill, but the field was rolling away. I got to the top and was spent and I was off. That's it, I'll save it for tomorrow. Eric hung in there and the field dissolved down to 19. With 4 to go, some bone head starts looking around over his shoulder and swerves into Eric and takes him down. By the time he got going again, the field was gone, but he still rolled in around 19th for $20. One small scrape and bar tape was the extent of the damage. 2 more crits to go. It's starting to get hotter and more humid now.
Cycling returns for a second year to historic Cedarburg, home of the acclaimed Strawberry Festival, Wine & Harvest Festival, and Winter Festival. Parkview Elementary School is the site for the daytime races and at 5:45 p.m. the action moves downtown to Washington Ave. for the Men's Pro-Am race.

Superweek Chronicles #4 Tour of Holy Hill RR
Ergomo Pro/Spin
So our original plan was to do 3 crits, take a day off, and then do 3 more. But since we're here, we decided to do the RR scheduled for today. It's funny, their course profile goes from 0-250 feet. Our start was delayed by 45 minutes. 8 laps for 70 miles, small kicker at the finish. You can do the entire course in your big ring with an 11-23. Nothing was getting away early on and after a while it seemed as if everybody just got weak and tired and didn't want to work anymore. On the 6th lap, there was a string of small attacks that started picking things up. I was feeling good and at the front. I lead into one of the turns and just kept pedaling hard after it. One rider was with me. I looked back and we had about 100 yards. I told him and we decided to go and see what happened. The gap continued to grow. There was one rider up the road just a little and we were bringing him back, and at the same time, another rider just bridged across. That's when the rear wheel started feeling soft. I looked down and it was half way flat. Crap. Bad timing. I couldn't maintain my speed to stay with the group and they were gone. The pack came by 30 seconds later, and the wheel car 30 seconds behind them. It was a slow wheel change. By the time I got going and up to the top of the hill, the peloton was out of sight. I chased for the next lap, but never saw them again. So I decided this was a good time to go watch the finish. It was a bummer to see that the break stuck it, 4 riders total. 2 more trickled in. Then the field sprint, which Patrick took by half a bike and Eric came in 16th. There were about 60 starters and 35 finishers. I feel good still, so we'll see how tomorrow goes.

Superweek Chronicles #3 Evanston Northwestern Healthcare Grand Prix of Cycling
Ergomo Pro/Spin
This effort was very similar to RMR. Flat with big sweeping turns. A few that were a little tight with curbing but no problem. Half way through the race I got pushed over to the right side of the pack close to the barriers and there was a rider just cruising at 5 mph. I yelled and tried to get clear, but there was nowhere to go. I almost made it to a complete stop, but endo'd into the orange netting instead. I yelled at whoever was in front of me, I always do, it makes me feel better. Free lap rule in effect, but no backwards travel on the course. It was a trick getting through the spectators all the way back to the wheel pit. I didn't make it in time before the field came around again, but I didn't care, I was taking free laps and getting back in the race. The officials didn't know anyway. Everything was OK. All I got was a small scrape on the knee and the shifter was crooked and the wheels knocked a little crooked. The wheels are still true. It was futile trying to get away, all of us tried several times but there were a lot of strong, hungry riders and everything kept coming back. We used the lap counter as an indicator of where to be in the last 10 laps. It's not easy maintaining 3rd or 4th lap after lap with a field of about 65, but I was hanging. Going into the last lap, Patrick was about 2nd and Eric attacked really hard. He went to the front and buried it for Patrick. I got swarmed and went from 5th to 20th. Tried like hell to move up, but the field was in full flight. Patrick held his position all the way, but ended up 2nd by 6 inches. Eric and I rolled in with the pack, out of the money, but a success for the team. Never, ever, ever drink a product called Vitamin Energy. They were giving away handfuls after the race, and we were thirsty, so we drank 2 each. 20 minutes later, Eric and I were running to the crapper. This continued about 8 more times for the next 2 hours. We officially have clean colon's. That diet sucks. Feel fine. We were able to eat dinner later. We actually laughed about it quite a bit, but it sucked. Legs still feel good. Looking forward to the next race.

I felt awesome today. Had great power. Eric, Patrick and I did a lot of attacking early on. There was a big attack about 30 minutes in and the field brought it back. I rolled casually to the front with Patrick and he launched a big attack. Only 2 riders went with him and Eric and I immediately went to the front to disrupt an organized chase. Nobody in the field would coordinate and work together. The gap grew by 10 seconds a lap, until they had a big gap. All smooth sailing from then on. With 8 to go, Eric attacked the field by himself and nobody went with him. he almost made it, but the field caught him with 500 meters to go. I really battled for postion the entire last lap, but kept losing postion through all the turns (7). Managed to pull off 16th overall. Patrick took 3rd and Eric rolled in around 22 with the field. They payout 20 deep, so we got $130 in the pot. We'll see how much we have in the end.

Rest day, for all of us
Agreed.
They should have let Klöden go. He would have saved himself a minute. He's obviously TT'ing and climbing well.
I want to see Levi through down a huge attack on a super hard climb and destroy the competition. That would be cool.

Future Cat4 lady
5 days and counting...

Super week baby! 6 crits in 7 days! Sweet! 5 of them are on the NRC calendar. It's going to be a blast. Free room and board courtesy of the Fasse residence. Don't be jealous, maybe you can go next year. If your lucky, I'll give daily updates on our victorious exploits. Patrick might come home with a mandatory upgrade certificate... between Tibbits upgrading, Gherig inevitably upgrading, I might slip into the top 5! How bout that. I'm not sure if I'll make the Coalville race, that's right after super week. I'll probably be tired. in France, Vino is playing it up, keeps pretending like he's suffering so much, whatever. It's just a show. Looks like the CTL is finally going to drop below 100. Enjoy the rest for now, August is a big month with hard road races.
