Superweek Chronicles #2 Carl Zach Cycling Classic presented by Couri Insurance Agency

This was a race that I will not soon forget. Technical course with a lot of tight, close turns. Field size was 69. I thought one more warm up lap would do some good, but it just ensured me a spot at the back of the pack at the start line. Sweet. I was feeling aggressive all morning, so this gave me a reason to fight my way to the front. It only took about 10 laps. Out of 50 total. Eric and Patrick had a nice spot at the front and were attacking and making it hard. Patrick took 2 priems. He was leading out Eric for one, but nobody could come around him. I managed to get up front to contest a priem (they have about 10). I tried to go from far out, thinking I could take them, my legs were feeling good. The line was 20 feet too far though, and I was passed by 2 riders. I dug really deep on that effort and didn't think I was coming back out of that hole. I just soft pedaled and kept going forward. Luckily the field was still big enough to drift back about 50 riders. I decided to save it for the finish after that. They decided it would be fun to make the last 4 laps before the finish all priem laps, so that made it for a hard finish, but I was feeling good. Continued to move up through the final laps. Going into the first turn of the final lap, some bonehead decided to overcook it and pile up the corner right in front of me. I was sitting about 7th place, so I thought I was in for a good result. I managed to just barely slow enough that I didn't endo over them onto the sidewalk. Clawed my way around the heap and did what I could on the last lap hoping to still get a top 20 (money goes 20 deep), but ended up 30th. I guess a group of 6 riders got away a few laps before the finish contesting the priems and finished 10 seconds ahead of the field. Patrick took second in the filed sprint for 8th. Eric got caught behind me in the pileup.
